ZEN
An elegant and powerful Linux distribution
CategoryDerivative
ZEN is an elegant, yet powerful Puppy Linux derivative.
Many key features have been removed to simplify and stabilize the desktop/user environment.
The ROX desktop and Rox Filer have been removed, and replaced by xli for background image loading, and a modified version of the original emelFM file browser that we are calling Zen Runner.
Zen Runner is a powerful, multipurpose system management tool that can perform many tasks from a single, integrated interface - file management, mounting/unmounting, program-launching, command-line functions, and much more .....
Joe's window manager is being retained in a modified form, with desktop/taskbar shortcuts replaced by powerful function-key commands.
A complete development environment is also included to allow compiling from source any additional applications to be added by the user.
There is no package management for this distro other than make, as the intent is to make Zen as stable as possible.
This makes this a 'power-user' distro, while remaining accessible to relative newcomers as well.
We have found precompiled binaries to be less stable than compiled-from-source programs - customized for the specific hardware and user-space environment that they will be running in.
Compiling from source using make worked extremely well for beginning Linux users for many years before package management systems began to be developed, and none of them has yet proven to be entirely satisfactory or universal.
(Where precompiled binaries must be used, they can be unarchived into their own directory, with the relevant files simply being copied to their needed destination.) :)
At this time, Xvesa is the preferred X-server, with Xorg as an option.
We are planning to explore the Linux Framebuffer with DirectFB∞ as a possible alternative to Xvesa.
We are presently using Zen in its alpha-stage, and hope to make a beta version available very soon.
So far it is working beautifully. :-)
