Alpha 6 Community edition available

Lassie is Puppy 3.02 it is currently in Alpha testing
"I propose that it be the basis of a Community Edition,
with the versions 3.02 - 3.09 being alpha and beta releases,
final being 3.10."
Barry

"In keeping with established Puppy philosophy, size is certainly an issue. I want it to be significantly under 100MB for the core Chihuahua. The "CE goodies" extra stuff (i.e. the packages that make it a fatter CE version as compared with a vanilla version) will be add-ons in the form of sfs or "Lassie/Boxer" modules.

Ttuuxxx is doing wonders with supplying ideas and packages. This version will have a real ttuuxxx stamp on it. It's not always straightforward though - but nothing is in this area of Linux development. No gain without pain!"
Tronkel

A Lassie sfs modules
(N.B. you will need Puppy 3.02 Alpha to run the SFS)

FireFox 3 Beta 3
For those interested in Firefox 3 Beta3, if have uploaded a Lassie version that uses this browse instead of Firefox 2.0.0.12

There have been comments about the instability of this version in Puppy. This might be because a previous Flash player plugin was installed previously. This version contains no Flash player. If you are using this with say a full Puppy 302Alpha, you should be able to symlink to the more stable flash plugin as used by Seamonkey

Get it here:

Firefox
http://www.puppylinux.ca/tpp/tronkel/lassieR3_302.sfs
Contains Osmo, Firefox 2.0.0.12, Sylpheed and a cut-down EZpup301, but with all themes.

Opera version of the Lassie sfs .
Apart from the opera browser, it is identical to lassieR3_302.sfs, which had Firefox as the browser.

Suggestions and feedback welcome

This is really intended as a taster of what is to come.
There are some configuration issues outstanding, but it is well worth a try,
say in conjunction with Puppy 302Alpha Full, or Barebones. Seems OK with retro versions as well.

I can see no reason why it would not be possible to provide
several flavours of Lassie. You could have lassie_xfce.sfs, or lassie_enlightenment.sfs or even lassie_kde.sfs.

Could even have a version with all of the popular browsers included if there is a demand.
This approach would finally settle all of the interminable arguments about which browser and which window manager is best. Take your pick!

Your personalised CE version would then consist of 2 downloads. 302Alpha Barebones and a lassie sfs, depending on what you want. Nothing to stop you also using the 302Alpha full version as your base if you want to - just a slightly bigger download.

Remember as always, you will need to create a pup_save at shutdown if you want to use the sfs module.

I'll perhaps leave the creation of specialist Boxer modules to those who have enough knowledge to make an sfs module. Creation of these Boxers can be done anytime even after CE is officially released.

Since I had thought of Lassie as being about 75MB max, there is still space available within this constraint for more packages. You can make suggestions on this. This current trial lassie sfs is still only 31MB even with full EZpup301.

"Co-leadership of the 3.xx series CE development between Ttuuxxx and Tronkel.
Jack is happier in the background contributing ideas and C++ code"

"I've built and uploaded a retro version of 302Alpha.
http://www.puppylinux.ca/tpp/tronkel
If you found that the 3.01Retro that uses kernel version 2.6.18.1 resolved issues relating to kernel problems, this may be of help.
On my hardware it proved extremely useful."
Tronkel

". . . sign me up, I did take project management last year, it was 65% of my diploma, which i passed, and still really happy about it !!!" Ttuxxx

How about making a start on say the basic repairs required on the core module?

Requirements:
  1. Make suggestions about trimming/enhancing the core module.
  2. Thoroughly test the core functionality of Chihuahua (barebones 3.02Alpha1) and discover where the problems lie. Post your findings here. I can think of Multisession and frugal install for starters. Any experts in this sort of area are cordially invited to contribute fixes to this crucial core functionality.
  3. Driver module problems. Testing and re-compiling if need be. CE version needs to work with as many systems as is possible.
