Long term there is considerable effort for using the final version of Dingo on the Classmate and the Eeepc are almost the same. PupEee has shown if you make something for the EeePC, it will work on the Classmate with a minimum of tweaking. If you are thinking of doing something for the Intel Classmate, then the ASUS EeePC is a good development platform.
PupEee is an alternative to the ASUS version of Xandros installed operating system. On EeePC, the installed Xandros can be customized to provide a standard Linux GUI (icewm). The EeePC standard Xandros can be kept with PupEEE on a suitable SD card. It is easy to modify the Grub boot loader for Xandros to load PupEee as an alternative. Saves waiting and trying to catch the boot process to bring up the boot device screen.
Barry Kauler is planning to support the Classmate with Dingo (Puppy 4). The Classmate keyboard is smaller than the EeePC and hard to use. The Classmate is built like a tank. It can take more abuse. The internal hardware is easier to set up with Puppy.

Tips
Wifi
First of all, if you changed the distro and want to use ndiswrapper, you need to blacklist the modules Linux tries to load by default for wifi. (Puppy Linuxhas GUI Network Wizard that loads drivers through ndiswrapper.)
1. Go to a terminal as root.
2. Edit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist using your favorite editor (nano /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist)
3. Add the following lines:
blacklist ath_pci
blacklist ath_hal
4. Restart the computer
5. To configure ndiswrapper, unzip the Windows drivers of your WiFi card somewhere (/home/jdoe/drivers in this example. The driver itself is usually).
6. Open up a terminal and go to that location (cd /home/jdoe/drivers)
7. Add the driver to ndiswrapper (ndiswrapper -i ./net5211.inf*)
8. Run: modprobe ndiswrapper
9.You also want to make sure ndiswrapper loads on startup. add ndiswrapper to /etc/modules
* (net5211.inf is avalible from the within the Asus EeePc 701 Support DVD Rev:1.1 at location: ”/Drivers/Wireless/ndis5x/net5211.inf”)

Breeezy was released in December 2007 by Raffy Mananghaya. Breeezy is a version of the Safepup variant of Puppy Linux 2.13, customized for the Eee. It is very fast, installs easily to an SD card, works well in a dual-boot system with XP, and it is easy to install additional software on it. It comes with Firefox. Raffy Mananghaya is the driving force behind Breeezy and he maintains comprehensive information on it
Pupeee was released on 29th January 2008 by Dan Van Wormer. It is a basic install of Puppy 3.01 with all the needed drivers installed. It should boot right up without asking for keyboard layout or screen resolution. Sound works right out of the box (the mic works as well). The webcam modules are installed but I have not been able to get it to work. The wireless card will show up the first time you run the connect wizard. The built in Ethernet port drivers are installed but not loaded. It is listed in the "load module" screen though. ACPI drivers are installed for the numlock and scroll lock keys. Volume up, down, mute, and print screen keys work but you have to use the alt key instead of the function key. The screen brightness keys work with the function key. Other additional items include:Batmon the battery monitor. A custom JWM-Tray file with auto hide on to help make use of the small screen. gtkpod, xmms, xine-ui, xine extra codecs, GQview, English dictionary for Abiword.

Introduction

The ASUS Eee PC is a subnotebook computer designed by ASUS and Intel noted at the time of its introduction in 2007 for its combination of light weight, Linux-based operating system, solid-state drive and low purchase price. Most versions of Puppy can run on the Eee PC, some have been designed specifically for it.

Why would someone want to use Breeezy? In my case, I lived with the stock Xandros OS for a while and found that it didn't fully meet my needs. I installed XP so I could use some software that I didn't want to take the time to learn to run under Xandros. Yet, I wanted to play with Linux and to have a fast booting system that would not have the overhead of virus- and spyware-checking software. For me, Breeezy is a good solution. I keep it on an SD card that is always loaded in my Eee. When I want XP I boot into that, and when I want Breeezy, I use that. I encourage you to give Breeezy a try. Raffy is very helpful and is honing it so it is an even better fit for the Eee.
